Things to do in Fethiye

From €65 · Fethiye Quad Safari takes you off-road through pine forests and over rocky ridges around Kayaköy, on a quad bike or buggy. You pick a single or do…

Fethiye sits on Türkiye's Turkish Riviera, where pine-covered mountains drop straight into a clear sea. If you're looking for things to do in Fethiye, you'll find a mix of beach time, boat trips, Lycian history and off-road adventure within a short drive of town. It suits couples, families with older children, walkers and anyone who wants a relaxed base with plenty of day trips, rather than a high-rise resort strip.

What sets it apart is how quickly the landscape changes. In one morning you can see ancient rock tombs above the harbour, then head into pine forests and ridge tracks, and by afternoon be swimming in turquoise water. The town itself is small and easy to walk, so you can settle in without a car.

Top things to do in the city

Fethiye Harbour and the Rock Tombs

Start in the harbour area, where gulets and day-boat operators line the waterfront. Above the town, carved into the cliff face, are Lycian rock tombs from the fourth century BC, with facades modelled on wooden house frames. The climb is short, but the steps are steep and uneven. Go in the early morning or late afternoon, when the light is kind to the stone and the heat is lower. Bring water and wear closed shoes.

Ölüdeniz and the Blue Lagoon

Ölüdeniz is the best-known beach in the area, with a shallow, calm lagoon backed by pine trees and a long pebble shoreline. The water is very clear, and sunbeds and umbrellas are available for a fee. In peak summer the lagoon gets busy by mid-morning, so arrive early if you want a quiet swim. Do not expect deep sand; sturdy sandals make the pebbles much easier to walk on.

Babadağ Paragliding

Above Ölüdeniz, Babadağ is one of the most popular paragliding take-off points in the country. Tandem flights are arranged through local operators and usually run in the morning, when winds are calmer. Your flight time depends on weather, so keep a flexible plan. Wear layers, because it is noticeably cooler at altitude than on the beach.

Kayaköy, the Abandoned Greek Village

Kayaköy is a ghost village of stone houses and churches on a hillside, left empty after the population exchange of the 1920s. It is a quiet, reflective place, and you should walk it slowly and respectfully. Paths are rough and uneven, so wear proper footwear. Allow a few hours if you want to combine it with lunch in the village below. Early or late in the day is best for photographs.

Butterfly Valley

Butterfly Valley is a narrow canyon that opens onto a pebbly cove, reachable mainly by boat. Many boat tours from Fethiye and Ölüdeniz stop here for a swim before continuing. There is a waterfall at the end of the valley that is worth the short walk in. Bring a dry bag for your phone and a towel, and check the boat schedule before you commit to a full day.

Quad Safari with Buggy Option and Door-to-Door Pickup

If you want to get into the hills, this three-hour quad safari takes you along forest trails, ridges and muddy tracks, with a buggy option if you prefer to share a vehicle. Door-to-door pickup saves you arranging a taxi. Wear long trousers, closed shoes and sunscreen, and check the detailed packing advice in our guide to what to wear. Morning departures are usually cooler and have better visibility over the coast.

Lycian Way Walking Sections

The Lycian Way, a long-distance trail along the coast, passes through the Fethiye area. You do not need to walk the whole route. A short section along the coast or through the pine forest near Ölüdeniz gives you a good taste of it. Carry at least two litres of water per person, even for a short walk, and start early in summer.

Fethiye Museum and the Ancient Theatre

The town museum displays finds from the region's Lycian, Roman and Byzantine periods, and it makes a useful introduction before you visit the tombs and ancient sites. An ancient theatre in the town centre is also worth a look. Both are good options for a rainy or very hot afternoon, so check current opening hours locally before you go.

Local Boat Trips Along the Coast

Day boats and gulets run trips around the bays, often stopping for swimming, lunch and snorkelling. A typical day includes several stops, so pick a tour that suits your pace. Ask what is included, such as lunch, drinks and equipment, before booking. Sun cream and a hat are essential on deck, as there is very little shade.

Best time to visit

Spring, from April to early June, is one of the best times to visit. The weather is warm without being punishing, the hills are green and wildflowers are out, and the beaches are not yet crowded. Early autumn, from September into October, offers similar conditions with warm sea water still lingering after the summer.

Summer, from July to August, is hot and busy, especially at Ölüdeniz and on the boat routes. It is a good choice if you enjoy a lively atmosphere and a long evening. If you go in summer, plan outdoor activities for the morning and rest in the afternoon.

Winter is mild by comparison, with cooler, wetter days and fewer visitors. Some seasonal businesses close, and boat trips may be limited, so check before you travel. Our month-by-month guide gives a more detailed picture of weather and crowds.

Getting there and getting around

Fly into the nearest international airport and continue to Fethiye by road. The journey time depends on your arrival point and traffic, so check your route before you travel. If you would rather not arrange a taxi or bus yourself, you can book a private airport transfer in advance so a driver meets you on arrival.

Inside Fethiye, the centre is compact and easy to walk, and dolmuş minibuses run to nearby villages and beaches. Taxis are widely available for longer trips. For Ölüdeniz and the coast, a dolmuş or taxi is the usual choice. Renting a car gives you the most freedom, but parking in the centre and at popular beaches can be difficult in summer.
