A Cappadocia balloon ride on this tour takes about three hours, from the moment the transfer collects you at your hotel in Göreme to the moment you are dropped back. The flight itself happens at sunrise, when the air over the valleys is usually at its calmest.
Below, the morning is laid out in order, so you know what happens at the hotel, at take-off, in the air and on the way home. You will also find short answers on weather, safety and what to wear.
The round-trip transfer is part of the tour, so there is no need to find the launch site yourself in the dark. Your pickup time follows the sunrise on your date, which changes through the year, so read it on your booking before you set an alarm. Dress in layers. Göreme sits at around 1,000 m above sea level, and mornings are cool even in summer. In winter they can be properly cold. Closed shoes and a light jacket you can take off once the sun is up work well.
Before anyone climbs into the basket, a pre-flight safety briefing is given. Listen to it even if you have flown in a balloon before, since it covers how to stand during the flight and what to do for landing. Your pilot is licensed, and the decision to fly rests with the pilot and the conditions. Wind is what matters most. If it is too strong or gusty, the flight does not go ahead that morning. That is how the system is meant to work, and it is the main reason a flight can be called off.
Once airborne, the balloon drifts over the volcanic landscape that Cappadocia is known for: fairy chimneys, rock formations and the folds of the valleys around Göreme. The direction depends on the wind, so the exact route changes from day to day. Watch the light as the sun comes up. It turns the rock slowly golden and picks out the shapes of the valleys. If you want video, use a wrist strap or a secure grip on your phone, and keep both hands free for the landing.
The pilot brings the balloon down at a spot that depends on the wind that morning. Follow the crew's instructions for the landing position and stay in the basket until you are told to climb out. The tour comes with a certificate, which is a nice thing to keep from the morning. The included transport then takes you back to your hotel. Plan a slow rest of the day, because you will have started very early.
