Tunisia Day Trips: Sousse, Monastir, El Djem Guide
Tunisia day trips: Sousse, Monastir, El Djem and Kairouan routes, durations, who they suit, and 8 tips to know before booking.
Our catalogue has four day trip options in Tunisia. Three are half-day (3.5–4 hours): Monastir, Sousse and El Djem. The fourth is an 8-hour full day: Kairouan and El Djem. All depart from the Sahel region on Tunisia's east coast, so these are the most suitable routes for Sousse, Skanes and nearby hotels.
How long is a day trip in Tunisia?
Four options by duration:
- Monastir tour, 3.5 hours: medina, Ribat and Bourguiba Mausoleum. Half Day Monastir Tour Medina Ribat and Bourguiba Mausoleum
- Sousse heritage tour, 4 hours: medina, Ribat and museums, with a licensed guide and a pace suited to family outings. Patrimoine de Sousse : médina, Ribat et musées (demi-journée)
- El Djem Express, 4 hours: a half day focused on the Roman amphitheatre. El Djem Express : arène romaine et expérience locale
- Kairouan and El Djem, 8 hours: hotel pick-up, with Kairouan's Aghlabid Basins and El Djem's ancient Roman remains combined. Excursion à Kairouan et El Jem
If you only have one day on a short holiday, half-day tours are enough. If you want to see several stops, the 8-hour tour makes more sense.
Which tour suits Hammamet, Sousse or Skanes?
If you're staying in Sousse, the medina and Ribat are a walkable route; El Djem and Kairouan require leaving the city. Skanes is a tourist area close to Monastir, so the Monastir tour is a natural choice from there. For those coming from Hammamet, I recommend checking the departure point and hotel pick-up option on the tour page before booking. Pick-up points may vary by tour.
8 local tips before booking
- 1) Decide how many hours you have first, then choose the place. If you have a return flight or evening plans, 3.5–4 hour tours leave a comfortable buffer. On the 8-hour tour, work out your return time before setting off.
- 2) Don't squeeze two half-day tours into the same day. Sousse and Monastir are close, but if you rush through the medinas you'll end up feeling you've seen nothing. Spread them over separate days.
- 3) Wear flat, non-slip shoes in El Djem. The amphitheatre has stone floors and steps. If you choose an afternoon tour in months with short daylight, such as November, allow for the early dusk.
- 4) Carry cash and small change in the medina. Card payments may not always be accepted at small shops. Museum and monument opening hours can also change, and some may be closed on certain days of the week. Check before your visit.
- 5) Bring water and snacks for the Kairouan day. The eight-hour tour is a long day. Kairouan is a holy city, so clothing that covers the shoulders and knees is both respectful and practical.
- 6) If you're going with children, consider the Sousse tour. It's designed as a family outing, and the guide tells stories along the way. For a pushchair, think about the medina's narrow streets and stone floors; a small foldable buggy or a carrier may be more comfortable.
- 7) Prefer a tour with a licensed guide. The Sousse tour has a licensed guide. In labyrinthine streets like the medina, a guide keeps you from losing your way and tells you the stories behind the buildings.
- 8) Consider the day trip separately from your holiday package. Wherever you booked your flight or hotel, the day trip is booked separately. Read the meeting time and point in the confirmation message once more the day before.

Can you do a day trip from Malta or Tunis city?
If you're considering coming from Malta in a single day, transport times and the return connection will be decisive. Since these details can change, check current schedules in advance. It's also hard to fit the return journey and a 3.5–8 hour tour into the same day. Staying a night and taking the tour the next day is much more comfortable.
We currently have no tours for the Tunis city (Tunis) area in our catalogue. The routes here run along the Sousse, Monastir, El Djem and Kairouan line.

Which tour suits whom?
- First-time visitors to Tunisia: the Sousse tour is a good introduction. The medina, Ribat and museums are seen in one half day.
- History enthusiasts: the El Djem Express or the Kairouan and El Djem tour. If you want to see Roman and Islamic-era remains side by side, the full-day tour is more satisfying.
- Those with little time: the Monastir tour, at 3.5 hours, is the shortest.
