Things to Do in Göreme: A Seasonal Guide to Exploring
Things to do in Göreme: balloon flights, valley walks, the Open Air Museum and evening plans. Find out what to do when by season, plus options for rainy days.
The best things to do in Göreme are a sunrise balloon flight, walks through the Pigeon and Rose Valleys, the rock churches of the Göreme Open Air Museum, and sunset views from panoramic viewpoints in the late afternoon. Everything is close together, so you can comfortably see it all in 2–3 days. Which activity is most enjoyable at which time is determined by the season. Today we are in the last week of October; autumn is a good time for this region, but the plan changes in summer and winter. I have described each season below.
What to do in Göreme by season?
Spring (April–May)
The valleys turn green and the weather is generally good for walking. The weather is changeable: mornings can be cold, midday warm, and rain is possible in May. Dress in layers; a light jacket and closed shoes with good grip are sufficient. This is a popular period for balloon flights, so book early.
Summer (June–August)
The inland climate of Cappadocia is dry and hot in summer, and there is little shade at midday. Do your valley walks early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Spend the middle of the day on museums, churches and shaded terrace breaks. A hat, sunscreen and water are essential. This is peak season for crowds; it is best to visit the Göreme Open Air Museum early in the morning.
Autumn (September–November)
This is the season in which this article was written. Days are generally mild, while mornings and evenings are cool. These are the most comfortable months for valley walks. The roughly 4–5 km Göreme–Uçhisar Pigeon Valley walk takes one and a half to two hours. Along the way you will see rocks carved into pigeon houses, and you finish at Uçhisar Castle. Timing a visit to the Rose Valley and Red Valley for sunset allows you to catch the hours when the rocks change colour. Evenings cool quickly as November approaches, so bring a light fleece.

Winter (December–March)
Snow is possible and mornings are very cold. Snow-covered fairy chimneys offer a distinctive view for photographers, but footpaths can become slippery. Crowds thin out and it is easier to find a room in hotels. A warm coat, gloves and non-slip shoes are necessary. Balloon flights may be postponed or cancelled due to wind and bad weather, so keep your schedule flexible.
What to do in Göreme if it rains?
In rain, valley paths turn muddy, so head for covered places and rock-cut spaces. The frescoes of the rock churches in the Göreme Open Air Museum are indoors; check the opening times and which sections are open before you visit. The Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu underground cities, about half an hour away, are also unaffected by the weather. In Avanos you can stop by pottery workshops and try making a bowl yourself on the wheel. In Göreme itself, sitting in cave cafés drinking tea is another option.
What is there to see in the town of Göreme?
The centre of Göreme is small and can be explored on foot. The streets have homes carved into rock, old churches and many hotels with terraces. A tour is not required; things you can do independently include:
- Walking up to the panoramic viewpoints that surround the town
- Taking a short walk to Love Valley
- Visiting the abandoned old village and rock church of Çavuşin
- Seeing the fairy chimneys of Zelve and Paşabağ
Entry conditions and opening hours may change, so check before you go.

What to do in Göreme in the evening and at night?
Evenings in Göreme are quiet; there are no nightclubs, but there is still plenty to do. Watch the sunset from a panoramic viewpoint, then try local dishes at cave restaurants. Testi kebab, a Cappadocian speciality, and regional wines are a good choice for dinner. Light pollution is low, so on clear nights the stars are clearly visible from a terrace. Some evenings whirling dervish (sema) performances are held in nearby historic venues; ask about the schedule and booking conditions in advance.
How do I book a balloon tour in Göreme?
A balloon flight is the most popular activity in Göreme. Cappadocia Sunrise Balloon Flight with Certificate Cappadocia Sunrise Balloon Flight (with certificate) lasts about 3 hours. The balloon takes off at sunrise and rises above the fairy chimneys and valleys, reaching a height of around 2,000 feet above the ground at some points. A certificate of participation is issued at the end of the flight.
The flight goes ahead if the weather permits; it may be cancelled or postponed in wind, fog or rain. Check the cancellation and postponement conditions on the booking page. If possible, do not schedule it for your first day in Göreme; if the weather turns, you will have a backup on the second or third day. Be prepared to get up early and to stay aloft for a while in cold air. Dressing in three layers will be sufficient.
