Is Side Worth Visiting? Day Trip or Overnight Stay?

Is Side worth visiting? We compared half-day, overnight and Alanya day-trip options, and we explain who each suits and what to expect in October.

Is Side worth visiting? Yes, but for the right length of time. Side is a small ancient harbour town on the Mediterranean coast east of Antalya, about an hour's drive from the city centre. Its ancient ruins, beach and walkable old town together work well for anything from half a day to two or three nights. If you expect a big city or a quiet village away from crowds, you may be disappointed. Three different plans are set out below, so you can see which one suits you.

What Side has and what it lacks

The old town sits on a small peninsula. The seaside columns of the Temple of Apollo, the Roman theatre, the ancient harbour and sections of the city walls are gathered within an area of a few hundred metres. Narrow streets lead to the bazaar, and the bazaar leads to the beaches. It is possible to explore on foot; no car is needed.

There are also things Side lacks. It has no grand panoramic landscape like Cappadocia, no hilltop castle like Alanya, and no museum density that fills a whole day like Istanbul. The bazaar part of the old town is touristy, dominated by souvenir shops and restaurants. If you come knowing this, you won't be disappointed.

Is a day trip to Side enough?

To see the ancient city and the old town, yes. If you are staying in Antalya, Belek or Kızılağaç, setting aside half a day for Side is enough.

Option 1: Half-day visit

Who it suits: Those on a short holiday, ancient site enthusiasts, and people who spend their beach time elsewhere.

You can explore the theatre, the temple and the old harbour in an hour or two. Group tours peak around midday; going late in the afternoon is more relaxed, and the light on the temple is better. Museum and site opening hours can change, so check before your visit.

Option 2: Staying two or three nights in Side

Who it suits: Those who want to combine beach time and walking, families with children, and people who prefer a slow pace.

If you stay over, Side's real advantage emerges: once the daytime crowds thin out, you can take an evening stroll through the old town and enjoy a calm beach early in the morning. From here you can also visit nearby stops such as Manavgat and Aspendos as day trips. The downside is that the longer you stay, the more the bazaar starts to feel repetitive. For plans longer than three nights, it's a good idea to add a trip or two.

Option 3: Staying in Side and visiting Alanya

Who it suits: Those who also want a castle, a boat trip or nature excursions.

Alanya is roughly an hour's drive from Side. As the journey is long, don't try to fit too many stops into one day. [Alanya Castle, Damlatas Cave and City Tour by Cable Car](\/tour\/alanya-castle-damlatas-cave-and-city-tour-by-cable-car-16) is a well-organised option that covers the castle, the Red Tower, the shipyard and Damlatas Cave together. What is Side like in October?

In late October the weather is still mild, and the sea is suitable for swimming on most days. Summer crowds drop noticeably, making the ancient site more comfortable to explore. Some seasonal businesses may start closing towards the end of the month; boat tours and event times can change with the weather, so check in advance. Evenings can bring a cool breeze off the sea, so a light jacket is useful.

What to do for a rest day and evenings?

Beyond the beach, Side has two good alternatives.
