Is Alanya Worth Visiting? Answered with a One-Day Itinerary

Is Alanya worth visiting? A one-day route covering the Castle, Damlataş, Cleopatra Beach and a boat trip; how it differs from Antalya and who it suits.

Alanya is a district in Antalya Province, roughly 2–2.5 hours from Antalya Airport. The short answer to whether Alanya is worth visiting is yes, if you want sea, history and one or two activities on the same holiday. The castle, the cave, the long beach and boat tours are close enough together to make a concrete programme even in a single day. If you are looking for major museums and a busy city life, Alanya was not built with that expectation in mind.

Is Alanya part of Antalya? How is it different from Antalya?

Alanya is a separate district within Antalya Province; it lies about 130 km east of the city centre. Antalya city is larger, and Kaleiçi, its museums and city sightseeing stand out. Alanya is a smaller seaside town, focused on holidays with its beach, castle, harbour and nature trips. They are not substitutes for each other. If you plan to see both, set aside Alanya for beach days and Antalya for city days.

If you are arriving at the airport, the journey is long, so a pre-arranged private transfer makes things easier: From Antalya Airport to Alanya Vip Transfer. The same option is available for the return: From Alanya to Antalya Airport VIP Transfer.

Morning: Alanya Castle and the Red Tower

The best time of day is early morning; especially in the hot months, the stone paths become oppressive towards midday. At the end of October the weather is generally milder, but sunscreen and closed, grippy shoes are still a good idea. The castle was built in the 13th century under the Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad. As you walk along the walls, you see from above how the town and the bay take shape.

The Red Tower and the shipyard are right next to the harbour. Both are a short distance apart, so you can walk around them after coming down from the castle. Opening hours and visiting conditions can change, so check before you go.

There is an approximately 4-hour tour that takes you past the castle, the Red Tower, the shipyard and Damlataş in one go, by cable car: Alanya Castle Damlatas Cave and City Tour by Cable Car. If you do not want to climb the hill yourself, this arrangement works well.

Midday: Damlataş Cave and Cleopatra Beach

Damlataş Cave is at the foot of the castle, right beside the beach. It takes its name from the stalactites inside the cave. Check the cave's visiting hours in advance. After the cave, you can walk to Cleopatra Beach or cross over by a short journey. The beach is long and sandy, and calmer in the morning.

Eat lunch at one of the small restaurants along the seafront. Resting in the shade during the hours when the sun is highest, then getting back into the water towards mid-afternoon, makes a good rhythm.

If you want to see Cleopatra Beach from above, there is a tandem paragliding flight: Alanya: Tandem Paragliding Flight Over Cleopatra Beach. The flight lasts about 2 hours (including preparation) and depends on wind and weather conditions. If you are flying for the first time, it makes sense to schedule it for the first half of the day and keep your plans flexible.

Afternoon: Boat trip from Alanya Harbour

At the end of October the sea is usually still warm enough for swimming, but check this against the weather forecast for that week. Boat tours depart from the harbour. Seeing the coastal caves and coves from the sea lets you understand the coastline from a different angle.

If you prefer a more relaxed arrangement, there is a catamaran trip that includes lunch and soft drinks: Alanya: Catamaran Cruise with Lunch and Soft Drinks. It lasts about 4.5 hours, and the caves and coves are part of the route. Doing both a castle visit and a boat trip on the same day can be tiring. It is healthier to take one in the morning and the other the following day.

Evening: Around the harbour and shipyard

Walk down to the harbour as the sun sets. When the Red Tower is lit up, it is a lovely time for a harbour stroll. You can sit in the cafés by the water and shake off the day's tiredness. There are plenty of options for dinner in this area; still, check the menu and opening hours on the spot.
