Best Month for a Cappadocia Balloon Ride: Your Chances of Flying in Each Month
Which month is best for a balloon ride in Cappadocia? April–June and September–October stand out. Month-by-month weather, timing, flight duration and booking tips are here.
The best months for a balloon ride in Cappadocia are April–June and September–October. In these months the morning wind is usually calmer and the chance of a flight being cancelled is lower. Balloons take off in almost every month of the year, but the weather decides whether a given flight goes ahead. The specific day matters more than the season. Below you will find what to expect month by month, when the balloons are seen, and how to plan your booking.
Which month is best for a balloon ride in Cappadocia?
There is no single "perfect month". But the chance of a flight going ahead and the beauty of the view are best combined in May, June, September and October. April is also a good choice, although spring winds can prevent flying on some mornings.
In winter, when the valleys are covered in snow, the scenery becomes far more dramatic. In return, the chance of cancellation rises and the mornings are seriously cold. In July and August the days are hot, but the morning air at flight time is cool. Flight disruptions in summer are generally less frequent.
Flights are cancelled by decision of the authorities who monitor the weather. No guarantee can be given for any month. Simply put a spare day into your schedule.
What time do the balloons go up, and how long is the flight?
Balloons take off just before sunrise. In summer this is around 05:30, and in winter around 07:30. The meeting time is earlier still, because time is needed for hotel pickup and preparation. You will see the exact time in your booking confirmation. Sunrise time changes slightly every day, so check it before your visit.
The time spent in the air is usually around 45–60 minutes. This varies depending on the weather and the operator. The package, including hotel pickup, a short briefing and a celebration after landing, takes about 3 hours in total. Cappadocia Sunrise Balloon Flight with Certificate follows this format. The tour also includes a certificate issued at the end of the flight.
If you would rather watch the balloons from the ground, the viewpoints over the valleys around Göreme become busy early in the morning. You can see dozens of balloons in the sky at the same time.

Month by month: weather, crowds and what to wear
March–May
Mornings are still cold, while the days warm up. The risk of wind and rain is higher in April, and May is generally more settled. The valleys turn green, adding colour to the scenery. Dress in layers: a light jacket, long trousers and closed shoes are enough.
June–August
The morning flight time is very early, so you will feel a chill in the air. Even a light cardigan helps. In the middle of the day the heat increases, so it is more comfortable to leave valley walks for the morning or evening. These are peak months, so it is important to reserve your balloon place in advance.
September–October
Calm mornings and more balanced temperatures make this period strong for ballooning. We are writing this at the end of October: towards the end of the month the mornings get noticeably colder, so a jacket and gloves are a sensible purchase. As November approaches, the chance of cancellation gradually rises.
November–February
When it snows, the fairy chimneys are covered in white and the photographs look very different. However, the mornings are very cold, and flights can often be cancelled due to ice or wind. A hat, gloves and a thick jacket are essential. If you are planning a winter itinerary, we recommend setting aside at least two mornings for the balloon.

Is a balloon tour in Cappadocia worth it?
Most likely, yes. This is Cappadocia's best-known experience, and seeing the shape of the valleys from above gives a perspective that cannot be reached on foot. To be honest, though: you get up very early, the weather may not be clear until the day itself, and there is always a chance of cancellation. Those who prefer to watch from the ground can still see most of the view.
For people who are afraid of heights, the flight is gentle, but being high up is not comfortable for everyone. For children, pregnant women and those with mobility restrictions, age and health conditions vary depending on the operator. Be sure to check before booking.
How should you plan your booking?
- Schedule the flight for the first few days of your stay. If it is cancelled, the following mornings act as a backup.
- Look early for spring and autumn dates. Demand rises in these months.
- Check the cancellation and change conditions on the booking page. What happens if the flight is cancelled due to weather is written there.
- Rest if you have an early programme the next day. The flight morning starts early, and you may feel tired in the afternoon.
You can reserve the sunrise flight with Cappadocia Sunrise Balloon Flight with Certificate. If you want something more active after the flight, Cappadocia: ATV Quad Safari with Hotel Pickup and Photo Stops is an ATV tour of about 2.5 hours passing by the fairy chimneys in the valleys. Check the departure time and whether it falls on the same day as your flight on the booking page.
